1. General information

The PLAB test is relevant for international medical graduates. If you wish to take up a period of limited registration (which you can do only if you are in supervised employment). The General Medical Council will need evidence that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to practise medicine in the UK. The PLAB test is designed to test your ability to work safely in a first appointment as a senior house officer in a UK hospital in the National Health Service (NHS).

Further details about the PLAB test can be found on the GMC website at : http://www.gmc-uk.org

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)

1. General information

In the United States and its territories, the individual medical licensing authorities ("state medical boards") of the various jurisdictions grant a license to practice medicine. Each medical licensing authority sets its own rules and regulations and requires passing an examination that demonstrates qualification for licensure. Results of the USMLE are reported to these authorities for use in granting the initial license to practice medicine. The USMLE provides them with a common evaluation system for applicants for initial medical licensure.

Further details about the USMLE can be found on the USMLE website at : http://www.usmle.org
